Paris Klerides was born in Larnaca, Cyprus, on the 18th of March 1970. He has been a long standing clerk within the Ministry of Education and Culture and more recently is in charge of a District School Committee.
He completed his studies within the Shipping and Nautical Sector and worked within this field for a period of around seven years. During this period he also completed a course in Psychological Studies. As a follow on to this he also completed a course in Accounting. In addition to the above, his thirst for knowledge encouraged him to complete various courses in varied educational fields.
In 1983 he started music lessons and during a ‘chance meeting’ in 1990 with a chess teacher, it re-kindled his long standing interest in Chess. It immediately became a passion and within a period of four years he became the National Champion of Cyprus. Here, he cannot omit mentioning one of the highlights of his career in 1993, when he had the honour of meeting and playing against the former World Champion Anatoly Karpov in Cyprus.
He has held the position of National Champion for many years which in turn resulted in him representing Cyprus in many International Tournaments as a member of the National Team. He has participated in the World Chess Olympiads for over twenty years. He is also the current National Champion in Blitz game.
He’s been awarded the titles of FIDE Master, FIDE Instructor and FIDE Arbiter. In April 2014 he was the Tournament Director of the 1st European Small Nations Individual Championship held in Cyprus which was regarded as a major success by all. After the tournament completion he was elected President of FIDE Zone 1.10 which comprises of ten European Small Nations.
He is the Delegate and General Secretary of the Cyprus Chess Federation. For the past fifteen years he has gained vast experience from being the main Organizer of most of the local events and tournaments.
Not being satisfied with his personal love and achievements in the field of chess, one of his main goals in life is to promote this love to the younger generations. In order to do this, he has created two Chess Academies teaching all ages; lectured in public schools; set up of a chess division within the Anti-Drugs Association; published many articles; arranged many charity events.
Apart from chess he has been deeply involved in various other sports and associations. He has been the General Secretary of the Cyprus Bowling Federation and the administrator of the first Greek bowling website, board member of the local Tennis Association, member of the Larnaca Anti-Drugs Association, member of the Association for the Welfare of the Blind and a member of the Harley Davidson Owners Club.
Being an active person he has a love of a wide variety of sports. His love of Ten Pin Bowling resulted in his team, ‘The Dreamers’, winning many championship and cup titles in the local league. As for tennis, he has taken part in many local competitions and managed to reach the final on four occasions. Each summer he also competes in Beach Tennis tournaments and has some cups to show for it. A while back, at the tender age of seventeen, he won the regional students Table Tennis competition.
His love of Entertainment and Music enables him to organize and present various functions and events throughout the year. He is known amongst his friends as a talented presenter, comedian and singer.
